BACHOK: A nine-year-old boy who went missing while swimming at Pantai Kemayang has been found drowned.
The body of Muhamad Irfan Afendi was discovered washed ashore about 1.5 kilometres from where he was believed to have been swept away by strong currents.
Bachok District Police deputy chief DSP Mohd Azrie Sulaiman said villagers found the victim at 10.45 am today.
The body was sent to Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia for a post-mortem.
DSP Mohd Azrie advised the public to be more cautious at beaches during the ongoing Northeast Monsoon season.
He said police and the Malaysian Civil Defence Force are conducting daily monitoring along the coastline to advise visitors.
The boy’s father, Mohd Afendi Ya, 44, said his son was supposed to take part in a mass circumcision ceremony this weekend.
He had promised to take Muhamad Irfan to the beach to fulfil a wish before the circumcision.
Mohd Afendi said he had called out for his son to return to shore just before the tragedy occurred.
He expressed deep distress at being unable to save his son due to the strong waves at the time.
