More than 7,000 cases of violence and sexual harassment against children by caregivers have been recorded in Malaysia from 2021 to November 2025.
KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 7,121 cases of violence and sexual harassment involving children and their caregivers have been recorded nationwide since 2021.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail revealed the figures in the Dewan Negara today.
He said 4,079 cases involved violence, while 3,042 were cases of sexual harassment.
Reported violence cases rose to 1,057 this year from 1,201 in 2024.
There were 612 cases in 2023, 502 in 2022 and 707 in 2021.
Sexual harassment cases have shown a steady annual increase.
There were 418 cases in 2021, 511 in 2022, 634 in 2023, 667 in 2024 and 812 as of November this year.
Saifuddin said perpetrators include parents, teachers, babysitters, adopted fathers and foster families.
He was responding to a question from Senator Datuk Nelson W Angang.
The minister outlined the ministry’s collaborative efforts in investigations and victim support.
The Home Ministry works with Interpol and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission.
Police collaborate with the Ministry of Health and the Social Welfare Department for victim care.
Identified victims receive counselling, medical and psychological treatment.
They are then referred to shelters as required under the Child Act 2001.
Police have also assigned liaison officers to schools to provide crime prevention information.
This is done in collaboration with various counselling agencies.
In a separate matter, Saifuddin addressed a question on undocumented children.
He said 20,032 cases of child registration had been successfully resolved as of yesterday.
