Pekan Nanas emerges as strategic hub in Johor-Singapore economic zone

MITI highlights Pekan Nanas as a key JS-SEZ location, attracting RM130 million in manufacturing projects and offering competitive land costs

KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) has identified Pekan Nanas in Johor as a strategic location within the Johor–Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ).

The ministry stated the area has strong potential to benefit from the zone’s development as a supporting area.

MITI said Pekan Nanas is no longer solely agricultural and can attract manufacturing and services sector participation.

It highlighted several advantages for investors, including available industrial land in parks like Pekan Nanas I, Pekan Nanas II, and Tropicana Industrial Park.

This land is suitable for small and medium industries, logistics, and technology-based support activities.

“Access to infrastructure and facilities, including the Second Link Expressway and connecting routes to Port of Tanjung Pelepas and Iskandar Puteri, adds value in terms of logistics and cross-border connectivity,” MITI said in a parliamentary written reply.

The ministry was responding to a question from Datuk Seri Dr Wee Jeck Seng regarding benefits for Pekan Nanas from JS-SEZ investment spillovers.

MITI also noted that more competitive land and operating costs compared to Iskandar Puteri and Johor Bahru make it an attractive alternative.

From 2024 to June 2025, MIDA approved seven manufacturing projects in Pekan Nanas with investments exceeding RM130 million.

These projects involve electrical and electronic products, metal fabrication, and vacuum cleaner components.

For the services sector, MIDA approved two green technology projects involving solar power generation for self-consumption.

MITI, through MATRADE, has conducted various trade promotion activities in Johor.

Currently, 1,329 registered exporters in Johor have received assistance through these MATRADE programmes. – Bernama
