Fire investigators in Penang are finalising their report into a fatal house fire that claimed two lives, with K9 units deployed to help determine the cause.
BUTTERWORTH: The Penang Fire and Rescue Department is finalising its investigation into a fire that killed a woman and her adopted daughter.
State director Mohamad Shoki Hamzah said the department could not yet confirm the cause, as it must await the full report before submitting it to police.
A fire forensics team continued its investigation using two English Springer Spaniel detection dogs, Woody and Sam.
The dogs discovered body fragments belonging to the young girl, which have been handed over to police.
In the incident, Hayani Yaakob, in her 50s, and her five-year-old adopted daughter Andra were burnt to death after being trapped inside their house.
Her son, Daniel Quyum Kamarozlan, sustained injuries from a collapsing roof and is in intensive care at Seberang Jaya Hospital.
Kamarozlan Muhammad, 57, said his son’s condition is stable but requires close monitoring due to severe injuries.
He said the remains of his former wife and their adopted daughter are at Kepala Batas Hospital, where DNA tests are being conducted.
“The DNA results are expected within a week,” he said.
Seberang Perai Utara police chief ACP Anuar Abdul Rahman said the case is classified as sudden death pending post-mortem and forensic reports.
He said information from the public and CCTV showed smoke and flames spreading rapidly at the scene.
