Penang is implementing short and long-term measures to combat coastal erosion affecting Batu Ferringhi and Tanjong Bungah beaches, key tourism spots.
GEORGE TOWN: The Penang government is taking action to resolve coastal erosion at Batu Ferringhi and Tanjong Bungah.
State Infrastructure, Transport, and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said the issue seriously affects beach beauty, visitor safety, and local tourism activities.
For Tanjong Bungah, the Drainage and Irrigation Department (JPS) has completed a technical report for areas near Mercure Hotel, Skyhome Apartment, and the Chinese Swimming Club.
JPS is now working to secure funding for immediate mitigation measures there.
Short-term measures involving sandbags will be implemented near Bayview Hotel, Lone Pine, Golden Sands, and Shangri-La in Batu Ferringhi.
Zairil added that JPS has applied for federal funding for 2026 to reduce erosion effects in identified areas.
A long-term RM61 million project for an outfall and coastal structures was approved under the 12th Malaysia Plan.
This project aims to reduce the erosion rate and keep the beaches safe, stable, and attractive.
Hydrographic surveying was completed in December 2025, with consultant appointments expected by the end of February 2026.
JPS is also reviewing the Penang Integrated Shoreline Management Plan (ISMP), due in the third quarter of 2027.
The study will guide the state in identifying at-risk beaches for systematic preventive planning.
