Perak health department monitors tuberculosis cases, urges public screening

Perak health authorities confirm 100 TB cases under treatment, state situation is controlled with no link to Johor cluster, public urged to get screened for symptoms.

IPOH: The Perak Health Department is conducting continuous monitoring to prevent the spread of tuberculosis within the community.

State Health Committee chairman Datuk A. Sivanesan said the TB situation in Perak remains under control and does not involve any outbreak.

“As of January, a total of 100 cumulative TB cases have been reported in Perak, all of whom are currently receiving treatment,” he said.

He confirmed the department is aware of the tuberculosis cluster reported in Kota Tinggi, Johor.

“Based on available information, there is no link between the tuberculosis case in Kota Tinggi and any individual in Perak,” Sivanesan stated.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad had confirmed a TB cluster in Kota Tinggi involving 33 positive cases.

The Johor cases were detected through the screening of 804 close contacts between January 25 and February 4.

Sivanesan urged individuals with symptoms like a prolonged cough, fever, or night sweats to undergo screening.

He noted screening is available at any of the 89 health clinics across Perak state.

“Tuberculosis is a notifiable disease under the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988,” he said.

This allows for close contact tracing and effective measures to break the chain of infection.
