RM87.6 million Bagan Datuk flood mitigation project planned

Phase 1 of the Bagan Datuk flood mitigation project, valued at RM87.6 million, is scheduled to start in 2026 to address drainage and flooding issues.

IPOH: Phase 1 of the Bagan Datuk Flood Mitigation Project, valued at RM87.6 million, has been planned to address local flooding issues. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the plan includes drainage improvements and a new flood retention pond.

The works cover a 0.65 km stretch at Tebuk Semani and a 1.25 km section at Parit 8 Barat. A flood retention pond will also be constructed at Sungai Balai Baroh.

The project is scheduled to commence in the third quarter of 2026. Ahmad Zahid stressed the need for immediate short-term measures while awaiting the large-scale project.

These measures include strengthening inter-agency collaboration to improve existing culverts and drainage systems. He said this would help reduce flood risks in the interim.

Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Bagan Datuk MP, reviewed the progress of several strategic development projects in the area. He visited Kampung Sungai Balai Baroh for a briefing on the flood mitigation plan.

He was informed that flooding stems from high rainfall, over 1,900 culverts, a non-uniform drainage system, and the area’s topography. These factors cause water accumulation at several locations.

The Deputy Prime Minister also reviewed progress on a new Tier IV Data Centre in Bagan Datuk. The centre results from a collaboration between his ministry, MARA Inc, Silver Streams and FELCRA.

It is classified among the largest and highest-capacity data centres in Malaysia. Ahmad Zahid said its development will bring investment, economic spillovers and job opportunities.

The first phase, with a 10MW capacity, is expected to be operational by mid-2027. The second phase, with a 25MW capacity, is slated for completion the following year.

He expressed hope both projects would be completed on schedule. This would provide direct benefits and long-term advantages for inclusive, sustainable development in Bagan Datuk.
