Sabah’s maritime security vital for blue economy growth

Chief Minister Hajiji Noor states that securing Sabah’s waters is essential for unlocking investments in marine tourism, fisheries and the blue economy.

KOTA KINABALU: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor has declared that strengthening security in Sabah’s waters is a non-negotiable priority for economic growth. He stated that investments in the maritime sector, marine tourism and the seafood industry cannot thrive without a stable security environment.

This agenda is central to supporting growth under the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) 2.0 plan. The goal is to realise the state’s potential as a Blue Economy Hub in the Eastern ASEAN region.

Hajiji said the maritime sector and Blue Economy are identified as new growth drivers in the SMJ 2.0 framework. This will involve developing a modern fisheries industry, marine tourism and coastal border towns.

“Sabah holds a strategic position with a coastline of more than 1,400 kilometres and serves as Malaysia’s frontline in Borneo and the Sulu Sea,” he said. He was speaking at a ceremony to present Aidilfitri cookies to security personnel and healthcare workers.

In eastern Sabah, the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (ESSZone) is strengthened by the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCOM). This command coordinates land, sea and air security operations as a symbol of national sovereignty.

“Therefore, strengthening security is crucial not only to protect the people, but also to pave the way for the development of border towns as new economic gateways for the state,” he said.

Apart from physical security, the state government also appreciates the commitment of healthcare workers. Hajiji noted they continue to combat infectious diseases like Tuberculosis (TB), which remains a public health challenge.

He said early detection, continuous treatment and health awareness programmes are crucial in protecting communities. This is especially important in rural and coastal areas.

He added that the festive cookies contribution was a token of appreciation for frontliners. He acknowledged their sacrifice in safeguarding the safety and well-being of the people.
