Sarawak embarks on a RM7.3 billion bridge programme with 143 projects to replace rural wooden bridges and build major new links, enhancing state-wide connectivity.
KUCHING: Sarawak has launched a massive RM7.3 billion bridge construction programme to improve transportation and accessibility.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the initiative comprises 143 projects, underscoring the state’s commitment to infrastructure, especially in rural areas.
“The programme includes 21 major bridges valued at RM6.92 billion, alongside the rural bridge transformation programme (RBTP), which allocates RM396 million for 122 rural bridge projects,” he said.
Uggah, who is also the State Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development, said the RBTP aims to replace old wooden bridges with modern concrete structures.
He was speaking when winding up for his ministry at the Sarawak State Assembly sitting.
The Public Works Department has already completed eight major bridges, including the Muara Lassa Bridge and Tun Taib Mahmud Bridge.
A further 10 major bridges are currently under construction, with nine expected to be completed next year.
