Selangor government sets aside RM54.34 million for flood mitigation, focusing on Sungai Klang and Sungai Langat basins with 17 new projects
SHAH ALAM: The Selangor government is allocating RM54.34 million to enhance flood mitigation projects, involving the addition of 17 new initiatives.
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari announced the funding while tabling Selangor’s Budget 2026 at the State Assembly.
The river basins involved are Sungai Klang (RM16.92 million), Sungai Langat (RM16.51 million), Sungai Selangor (RM5.74 million), Sungai Buloh (RM1 million), and Sungai Bernam and Kapar Besar (RM2.8 million).
“Greater emphasis is given to the Sungai Klang and Sungai Langat river basins, which are facing rapid development,” said Amirudin.
He noted this development leads to increased surface water flow, resulting in frequent and severe flash floods and monsoon floods.
The projects will be implemented through integrated collaboration with the Federal Government.
Amirudin said this ensures solutions are holistic, sustainable and high impact in controlling flood disaster risks.
An allocation of RM11.51 million was also announced for the Selangor Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS).
This includes 10 new projects for technical expertise services to manage every river basin meticulously.
Holistic river basin management is key to the sustainability of Selangor’s water sources.
Its development must be implemented in an integrated manner as the main strategy.
“This approach is designed to maximise socio-economic benefits and ensure resilient water-source management,” he added.
Selangor JPS received a further RM12.89 million allocation with 10 additional new projects.
This aims to strengthen the state’s drainage system capacity in high-risk areas.
It will improve internal drainage systems to handle heavy rainfall and high water flow.
Regarding coastal areas, Amirudin announced a RM4 million allocation for 11 new projects.
The work encompasses improving and strengthening coastal embankments in affected areas.
Coastal area development is crucial for resident well-being and ecosystem sustainability.
“Climate change and frequent high tides demand more proactive measures,” he stated.
These measures will strengthen protective barriers in Sabak Bernam, Kuala Selangor and Kuala Langat. – Bernama
