Selangor government acts on Sultan’s cleanliness decree

Selangor’s state government implements immediate measures and long-term plans to address cleanliness issues following the Sultan’s decree on waste management.

SHAH ALAM: The Selangor state government has affirmed its commitment to upholding the decree of the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, regarding cleanliness and waste management concerns.

Local Government and Tourism Committee chairman Datuk Ng Suee Lim said the Sultan’s remarks serve as a crucial reminder to the state and local authorities.

He stated that cleanliness impacts public well-being, health, and the state’s overall reputation.

Several short-term measures have been immediately strengthened in response.

These include comprehensive mapping and monitoring of waste hotspots across local authority jurisdictions.

Collection frequency has been increased in high-density and high-traffic areas.

Coordination for bulky waste collection has been improved, while field supervision has been enhanced.

Rapid response teams have also been deployed to address unexpected cleanliness issues.

“The state government has also instructed that each waste hotspot have a clearly designated responsible party,” Ng said in a statement.

He added these sites must be continuously monitored with follow-up action taken for recurring problems.

The state is also finalising a comprehensive long-term plan for solid waste management.

This plan is linked to the implementation of the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Act 2007 (Act 672) in Selangor.

It includes the phased development of waste-to-energy plants across the state.

The WTE project in Jeram, Kuala Selangor is expected to begin operations in early 2026.

Another project in Tanjung Dua Belas, Kuala Langat is targeted for completion in December 2027.

“This initiative is part of the transition towards a more sustainable and integrated solid waste management system,” Ng said.

He noted that while the finalisation of Act 672 is pending, all local authorities must optimise their existing powers.

They have been instructed to use their resources and capabilities to ensure public cleanliness is maintained.

Ng assured that all of Sultan Sharafuddin’s remarks would form the basis for continuous improvement by the state.

Efforts will be intensified to ensure Selangor remains a clean, livable, and reputable state.

He emphasised that cooperation from all parties is essential to achieving this objective.

This includes local authorities, technical agencies, business premises, and local communities.
