Selangor govt on full alert as Tropical Storm Senyar nears west coast

Selangor activates full preparedness measures as tropical storm Senyar threatens Malaysia’s west coast

PETALING JAYA: The Selangor government has activated full preparedness measures ahead of Tropical Storm Senyar, which is expected to bring heavy rain and strong winds to Malaysia’s west coast, including Selangor.

In a statement on X today, Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the state government had shifted into full readiness as the storm approaches.

“A total of 1,173 temporary evacuation centres (PPS) with a capacity of 244,000 people, 344 vehicles and 227 boats have been placed on standby. Forty-five siren stations have also been activated to provide early warnings to affected residents.

He urged Selangor residents to remain alert, monitor MetMalaysia’s updates closely and be ready to evacuate if conditions deteriorate.

“On this blessed Friday, let us all pray that our state and our country are protected from all disasters and harm, Insya-Allah.”

Amirudin’s statement come as authrorities crace for potentially worsening conditions along the west coast, with residents urged to prepare for possible evacuation.

Yesterday, Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) issued a statement that the Senyar cyclone was detected north of Sumatra and is moving east-southeast across the Strait of Malacca towards the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia.

Its director-general Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip said the system was located at 3.6°N and 99.9°E, over the sea north of Sumatra and west of Lumut, Perak, travelling at around 24kph.

“This situation has the potential to bring continuous heavy rain, strong winds and rough seas across Peninsular Malaysia, particularly in the western and central states of the peninsula beginning yesterday (Nov 26).

“The department has updated the Tropical Storm Warning, the Continuous Heavy Rain Warning, and the Strong Winds and Rough Seas Warning for Kedah, Penang, Perak, Pahang, Selangor, the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, Negeri Sembilan, Malacca and Johor.

“The warnings are in effect from Nov 27 to Nov 29. The department will continue to monitor the development of this tropical storm and issue updated information based on current conditions.”

Hisham urged the public, particularly coastal communities, fishermen and those in flood-prone areas, to stay alert and prepared for possible disruptions.

He also advised the public to follow the latest updates through its official website, the myCuaca app, official social media channels and its hotline at 1-300-22-1638.
