NADMA completes RM907,000 upgrade of SMK Matang’s hostel into a permanent disaster relief centre, the third such facility nationwide to aid flood victims
KUALA BERANG: The permanent disaster relief centre at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Matang has been fully upgraded and is now operational.
National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) director-general Meor Ismail Meor Akim said the RM907,000 project converted an unused hostel block from July to December last year.
He stated this facility is the third permanent centre completed nationwide, following two similar centres in Johor.
“We plan to establish 15 permanent disaster relief centres nationwide,” Meor Ismail told reporters after officiating the handover ceremony.
He added the aim is to ensure greater comfort for flood victims while ensuring the facility has utility outside the flood season.
The SMK Matang centre can accommodate more than 200 people at any one time.
It is equipped with improved facilities, including disability-friendly toilets, seven rooms, and a storage area for supplies.
Meor Ismail said all relevant agencies are on full alert for the next phase of the Northeast Monsoon, expected to begin soon.
“Several states are currently experiencing floods, and another surge of heavy rain is forecast,” he said.
All agencies have been on standby since the early stages of the monsoon season, he confirmed.
