Manager fined RM80,000 for harbouring illegal immigrants

A restaurant manager in Kuala Terengganu was fined RM80,000 for allowing 16 illegal immigrants to be present at his premises, with a six-month jail term if he fails to pay.

KUALA TERENGGANU: A restaurant operations manager was fined RM80,000 by the Sessions Court here today.

Judge Nazlyza Mohamad Nazri imposed the sentence on Muhammad Akmal Azizan, 40, after he pleaded guilty.

He was charged with allowing 16 illegal immigrants to enter or remain at the Ns Syabuyaki restaurant in Mayang Mall on January 4.

The offence falls under Section 55E(1) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.

The judge ordered a fine of RM5,000 for each of the 16 immigrants found on the premises.

Muhammad Akmal will face six months’ imprisonment if he defaults on the payment.

The prosecution was handled by the Terengganu State Immigration Department’s Prosecution Unit.

Lawyer Lim Kwang Ching represented the accused, who paid the fine immediately.
