JKM is prepared for more flood victims as heavy rain warnings are upgraded, with eight relief centres currently housing 219 people
KUCHING: The Department of Social Welfare (JKM) in every state is prepared for a potential increase in flood victims at temporary relief centres.
This readiness follows the Malaysian Meteorological Department upgrading its continuous heavy rain warning to the orange level for several East Coast states.
The warning is due to a Northeast Monsoon surge expected to last until December 18.
Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said JKM’s district-level presence enables immediate assistance.
“All relevant parties have been asked to be fully prepared to ensure that the safety and well-being of the people continue to be protected,” she said.
She spoke after the Program Ceria Kasih Yayasan Kebajikan Negara and Back to School Contribution event here today.
As of 4.30 pm, eight relief centres remained open across five states.
These centres are housing 93 families, comprising 219 victims in total.
JKM has taken immediate actions including opening centres and facilitating victim self-registration via the MyIBJKM system.
The department is also distributing basic necessities to those affected.
Nancy confirmed that relief supplies are sufficient to meet the needs of all current victims. – BERNAMA
