The southwest monsoon starts May 14, bringing drier weather until September, but squall lines may cause morning thunderstorms in western regions.
KUALA LUMPUR: The Southwest Monsoon is expected to begin on May 14 and will persist until September, following consistent winds blowing from the southwest, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) announced today.
MetMalaysia director-general Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip said that during this period, low humidity levels will typically result in reduced cloud formation over most areas.
This means fewer rainy days and more dry days across the country, he explained in a statement.
However, Dr Mohd Hisham cautioned that heavy rain accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms may still occur in certain areas.
These include the western parts of Peninsular Malaysia, northern Sarawak, and western Sabah, particularly in the early morning hours due to the presence of squall lines.
“These are squall lines that form over the Straits of Malacca and the eastern South China Sea before moving inland as a result of wind convergence. These squall lines can persist for several hours,” he said.
Dr Mohd Hisham noted that during the peak of the monsoon, from July to September, localised and transboundary haze could occur if open burning activities are not controlled.
In light of this, he advised the public to avoid open burning and also encouraged water conservation throughout the season.
