SPM students study in flood relief centres as exams begin

SPM candidates in Kota Bharu continue exam preparations at relief centres after being displaced by sudden flooding, using phones for last-minute revision.

KOTA BHARU: SPM candidates in this district are battling floodwaters while preparing for their crucial national examinations.

Several students were forced to evacuate their homes as floodwaters surged to 0.6 metres within minutes last Saturday night.

At the relief centre at SK Tapang, candidates sat near electrical outlets to continue their last-minute revision.

Nik Mohd Idham Nik Abdul Rahim, 17, lost all his study materials when fleeing his flooded home.

“I left the house with only the clothes on my back,” he told reporters at the relief centre.

“All my notes were gone. The only thing on my mind then was just to leave.”

The SMK Panji student now relies solely on his smartphone for revision.

“I’m nervous. The exam is tomorrow,” he said.

“I’m trying to find a quiet corner to revise, but my mind is everywhere because the road to school is still underwater.”

Another candidate, Mohd Faris Aiman Mohd Azri from SMK Tanjong Mas, also depends on digital notes sent by teachers.

“I didn’t even have time to save my books,” the 17-year-old said.

“The water rose too fast. Revising on my phone feels different, but it helps reduce the anxiety.”

At SK Islah relief centre, Wan Muhammad Radhi Wandee remains determined despite the challenging conditions.

“My family and I had to move here after our house was flooded last Saturday,” the SMK Kota Bharu student said.

“Even with this test, I won’t give up. I want to be ready for the first paper, Bahasa Melayu, tomorrow.”

His mother, Siti Rahmah Abdul Manaf, 38, constantly encourages him to stay focused on his preparations.

The Education Ministry is monitoring flood preparedness amid unpredictable weather conditions.

Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said priority is ensuring SPM candidates can sit for exams without disruption.

Student safety in flood-prone areas remains the ministry’s main concern. – Bernama
