STPM and Matriculation transfer won’t disrupt students, says deputy minister

The proposed move of STPM and Matriculation programmes to the Higher Education Ministry will not affect student learning, assures Deputy Education Minister.

IPOH: The proposed transfer of Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) and Matriculation studies will not disrupt students’ learning processes.

Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh said the move from the Ministry of Education (MOE) to the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) requires extensive discussion and will not be rushed.

He stated that management from both ministries will meet next week to determine a suitable timeline for the transition.

“We cannot implement it abruptly, for example, having it under MOE today and MOHE tomorrow,” Wong told reporters.

He explained the change involves complex matters including asset management, maintenance and teaching staff.

Wong was speaking after officiating the launch of smartboards for 83 Tamil national-type schools in Perak.

The smartboard initiative involved an allocation of RM984,000.

Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said yesterday the government would establish a special committee to study the proposal.

The move is part of planning for the 13th Malaysia Plan, scheduled to begin in 2026.

Media reported on December 7 that Zambry said the transfer aims to streamline assessment processes and university entry pathways.

It is among major reforms planned under the Higher Education Development Plan 2026-2035. – Bernama
