Evacuation of school students and teachers, two foreign workers drowned in flooded canal as Sarawak floods spread
BINTULU: More than 400 people have been evacuated already in the flooded districts of Niah, Bintulu, Suai, Beluru and Miri, according to reports from the districts’ ground units of the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department.
As of this morning, those evacuated included teachers and students at Sekolah Kebangsaan Kampung Nyalau, a boarding school in the Bintulu district (see pic).
They had alerted the Bintulu Bomba station after their school compound was inundated by floods, where water rose to about a metre high.
At Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Suai, some 90 flood victims are being sheltered in the school hall. The school continues to run SPM examinations despite being hit by flash floods in its compounds, with the Suai Bomba units on hand to ensure safety of the students and teachers.
In Beluru, two Indonesian workers in a plantation drowned after being swept away in a flooded canal. The Beluru Bomba reported that the incident happened in the canal at the Simpang Lapok plantation located along the Jalan Beluru-Long Teru locality. The bodies of Aidil, 20 and Irfan, 18, were recovered this morning after a search operation.
Ground reports from other flooded locations showed evacuations ongoing in Kpg Padang in Sepupok sub-district, Kpg Muhibah in Niah district and Kpg Kemunting in Bintulu district.
Sarawak is facing the full onslaught of the monsoon season, with torrential rain reported daily in many districts.
