Six flood mitigation projects in Larut Matang and Selama district will be fully operational by November’s end with RM1.6 million funding
TAIPING: Six flood mitigation projects in the Larut Matang and Selama district are expected to be fully completed by the end of November.
Perak Department of Irrigation and Drainage director Dr Asnor Muizan Ishak said the RM1.2 million project received federal government special allocation funding.
The project involves deepening retention ponds and rivers, plus constructing flood embankments to reduce flooding risks in high-risk areas.
“Overall, the field work is now reaching its final stage, and it is a short-term step we are taking to reduce flood risks as recently experienced,” he said.
State government additional funds of RM400,000 brought the total allocation to RM1.6 million for post-flood work following the October 23 incident.
He spoke after the DID LMS District Flood Emergency Work Site Visit Session attended by Deputy Prime Minister’s special officer Neow Choo Seong.
Asnor Muizan advised residents to maintain embankment structures and retention ponds to prevent damage from human activities.
“We urge all parties to play their respective roles in ensuring the cleanliness and smooth flow of water,” he said.
Blockages from twigs, debris, and floating materials remain among the main causes of flash floods.
Meanwhile, Neow said the visit aimed to assess the progress of DID’s project implementation.
They requested additional studies and applications for medium- and long-term projects for more comprehensive solutions.
“We don’t want these temporary measures to be in vain,” he said.
Follow-up project continuity is important for fully restoring the river drainage system and gradually reducing flood risks.
On October 24, Neow announced the RM1.2 million allocation following Deputy Prime Minister Fadillah Yusof’s October 3 visit to Taiping. – Bernama
