Perhilitan moves a 1.5-tonne male elephant from Hulu Besut to prevent further damage to oil palm crops, involving 16 staff in the operation.
JERTIH: The Terengganu Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) has relocated a wild elephant found damaging crops in Hulu Besut.
The 1.5-tonne male elephant was captured last Friday afternoon near Kampung Felcra Keruak.
Director Loo Kean Seong said the relocation operation began at 8 am today and concluded around 1 pm.
Sixteen staff from Terengganu Perhilitan and two elephant conservation centres were involved in moving the animal.
Loo stated this was the first wild elephant captured and relocated by his team this year.
“By capturing and relocating elephants in this village area, it helps prevent the villagers from suffering greater losses,” he said.
He added that five wild elephants were successfully captured and relocated in Terengganu throughout last year.
The public is advised to be vigilant and report wildlife encounters to Perhilitan immediately.
