Umno VP dismisses MCA exit talk, says ties remain strong

Umno vice-president Johari Abdul Ghani downplays MCA’s threat to leave Barisan Nasional, stating their relationship remains close after 50 years

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani has dismissed suggestions that MCA may leave Barisan Nasional (BN).

Johari, who is also Plantation and Commodities Minister, said relations between the two long-standing coalition partners remain good.

He stated that each party has its own agenda and will make decisions based on internal considerations.

“As of today, I see MCA still with BN,” Johari told reporters after launching the 100 Years of Rubber Research celebration.

He added that it is difficult to have a single absolute political party in most countries today, necessitating adaptation.

“But BN and MCA — our relationship is very close. More than 50 years,” he said.

His comments follow a reported statement by MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong yesterday.

Wee was quoted as saying the party would quit BN if any of its components work with DAP in the next general election. – Bernama
