Malaysia’s Youth Parliament is on track for a June debut, with elections for representatives planned for May, says Dewan Rakyat Speaker.
KUALA LUMPUR: The inaugural sitting of Malaysia’s Youth Parliament is expected to be held as early as June this year.
Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul (pic) said elections to select the youth representatives are planned for early May.
He stated that nearly all preparations, including the format and guidelines, are complete, with the current focus on finalising the establishment of political parties at the university level.
“The format is almost ready, the guidelines are also ready. Right now, we are finalising the establishment of parties at universities,” Johari told reporters after the opening of Parliament’s fifth session.
He added that the implementation is subject to smooth final preparations, which are now in their last stage.
“If our system is ‘alright’ this month or next month, we may see the elections taking place in May or June, and the sitting will begin after that.”
Johari has previously emphasised that the Youth Parliament is a crucial effort to expand youth participation in the nation’s democratic system.
He said it provides early exposure to parliamentary proceedings, managed previously by the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
Through this platform, young people will be directly exposed to structured debate and the responsible presentation of ideas and proposals.
The initiative aligns with efforts to strengthen democratic culture and cultivate a future generation of mature and credible national leaders.
The opening ceremony for the Dewan Rakyat and Dewan Negara today was officiated by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia.
