Zambry urges dialogue over UM logo dispute with student group

Higher Education Minister calls for consultation, not legal action, in Universiti Malaya’s dispute with an unregistered student organisation over logo use.

PUTRAJAYA: The Ministry of Higher Education has called for a constructive approach in resolving a dispute between Universiti Malaya and a student organisation over the use of the university’s logo.

Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir said any confusion or procedural breach should first be settled through discussion and consultation.

“I am following the latest developments involving the Letter of Demand issued by UM to a student organisation,” he said in a statement.

Zambry emphasised that dialogue and negotiation align better with the spirit of the university ecosystem.

He stated such matters should not escalate to legal action if room for an amicable solution remains.

The minister stressed all student associations must respect university rules and guidelines.

This is especially true for matters involving the use of an institution’s name, logo, and identity.

For unregistered associations, Zambry suggested the university adopt a more educational approach.

He said they could be called in for appropriate guidance.

“I hope UM will take more proactive and consultative steps,” he added.

Zambry also urged students to approach the issue with an open mind to find the best solution.

The ministry always encourages a culture of dialogue and mutual respect in higher education.

A local news portal reported Liga Mahasiswa Universiti Malaya claimed it faced intimidation.

This followed a legal notice requiring the group to cease using UM’s name as it is not officially registered.
