Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim says the multiracial celebration of Chinese New Year showcases the spirit of unity among all Malaysians.

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the Chinese New Year celebration accentuates the spirit of unity among Malaysians.

He made the remarks while attending the MCA-organised Chinese New Year celebration at Wisma MCA here today.

“I came to celebrate the Chinese New Year organised by MCA, and this is not just for one group, but a celebration for all Malaysians,” Anwar said.

He added that the festivity is joyously celebrated and reflects the nation’s unity.

Anwar said the celebration of the Year of the Horse signifies strength and energy.

He expressed hope that this would drive economic growth and national development.

“I hope the Year of the Fire Horse will spur more dynamic and vigorous growth,” he added.

Anwar noted that the horse symbolises swiftness, tremendous strength and energy.

He said he hopes Malaysia’s economic performance and development will be way better this year.

At the event, Anwar joined guests in the traditional yee sang tossing ritual.

This ritual symbolises prosperity and good fortune for the coming year.

Also present was Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Other dignitaries included former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob and former MCA president Tan Sri Tan Koon Swan.

China’s Ambassador to Malaysia Ouyang Yujing was also in attendance.

According to the lunar calendar, this is the Year of the Horse.

In Chinese belief, the horse symbolises determination, perseverance and progress.
