PM Anwar pledges full tax refunds for 2023 and 2024 by year-end

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim commits to settling all excess tax refunds for 2023 and 2024 this year, responding to public and small business concerns.

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has pledged to fully settle all excess tax refunds for the 2023 and 2024 assessment years within 2026.

Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, said the decision to expedite the refunds was made in direct response to public feedback, particularly from small businesses.

“We listened to the concerns of the people, especially small companies,” he said in his 2026 New Year Address.

He revealed that excess tax refunds totalled RM22.5 billion in 2024, which was the highest amount recorded in five years.

The Prime Minister also noted that the Inland Revenue Board successfully resolved approximately 3.7 million excess tax refund cases in 2025.
