PM Anwar seeks Sarawak’s help to curb diesel smuggling

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim seeks Sarawak’s cooperation to combat diesel smuggling, citing lower fuel prices in the state as a key factor.

KUCHING: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called on the Sarawak state government to assist federal authorities in tackling diesel smuggling across its borders.

He stated that he has personally requested Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg to collaborate with enforcement agencies, including the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN).

“This is because diesel prices in Sabah and Sarawak are lower, which makes smuggling more likely,” Anwar said at the 2026 state-level MADANI breaking-of-fast event.

He made these remarks at Masjid Jamek Negeri Sarawak this evening.

Separately, the Prime Minister affirmed that the MADANI Government will maintain the RON95 petrol subsidy under the BUDI95 programme.

This commitment stands despite global oil prices exceeding US$100 per barrel due to ongoing conflict in West Asia.

“That’s why we must pray for a quick resolution to the conflict in West Asia so we’re no longer burdened,” he added.

He noted the subsidy will continue alongside other government financial savings measures.

During the same event, Anwar also announced a federal allocation of RM150 million.

The funds are approved for remedial work on the Sungai Sarawak Barrage.
