PM Anwar’s packed Turkey visit includes Erdogan meeting and highest award

PM Anwar Ibrahim meets President Erdogan, chairs strategic council, receives Turkey’s top honour and delivers a public lecture in Ankara.

ANKARA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has a full agenda for the second day of his official visit to Turkey.

His schedule is highlighted by a meeting with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the Presidential Complex.

Anwar began the day with a courtesy call from Turkey’s Defence Industry Secretary Prof Dr Haluk Gorgun at his hotel.

The Prime Minister also delivered a public lecture titled ‘Power Shift: Strategic Choices for Malaysia and Turkey’.

The audience comprised professionals, academics, senior Turkish officials and students.

Anwar was later accorded an official welcoming ceremony ahead of his closed-door meeting with President Erdogan.

Both leaders then jointly chaired the inaugural Malaysia-Turkey High-Level Strategic Council (HLSC) Meeting.

This was followed by a joint press conference in the afternoon.

Anwar will also be conferred Turkey’s highest award, the Order of the Republic.

The award recognises his role in strengthening relations between the two nations.

His second day concludes with an official dinner hosted by President Erdogan.

Anwar is accompanied by his wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and several ministers.

The delegation includes Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan and Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani.

The official visit, which concludes tomorrow, aims to further strengthen longstanding bilateral relations.

Malaysia’s total trade with Turkey from January to November 2025 reached RM21.2 billion.

Turkey remains an important economic partner for Malaysia.

In 2024, Turkey was Malaysia’s third-largest trading partner among West Asian countries.

It was also Malaysia’s largest export destination and fourth-largest source of imports in the region.

Total bilateral trade for 2024 was valued at RM24.15 billion.
