Police investigate Tony Pua for social media remarks on monarchy and Rukun Negara, with 28 reports filed nationwide.

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have opened an investigation paper against former Damansara MP Tony Pua following a statement uploaded on his Facebook account that allegedly touched on sensitive issues involving the Constitutional Monarchy institution and the Rukun Negara.

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk M. Kumar said the investigation is being conducted under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code for statements conducing to public mischief and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

“The investigation was initiated after police received 28 reports nationwide regarding the post,” he said briefly when contacted here today.

He said the police would summon all parties involved, including Tony, soon to assist in the investigation.

Yesterday, Tony, who is also chairman of the DAP Disciplinary Committee, was reported to have stated that Malaysia practises a Constitutional Monarchy system in which the powers of the rulers are generally limited to certain aspects only.

The statement is believed to have been issued following a decree by the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, suggesting that Seri Kembangan assemblyman Wong Siew Ki and former Selangor executive councillor Ronnie Liu visit Dataran Selangor once a week to better understand and appreciate the meaning of the Rukun Negara.
