Anwar warns of early polls as PH-BN rift deepens over Johor seat dispute
PETALING JAYA: The unity government is facing what may be its most visible test of cohesion after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim warned that escalating friction between Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Barisan Nasional (BN) could pave the way for an early general election.
Speaking at the Pakatan Harapan Convention 2026 at the Persada International Convention Centre on Sunday, Anwar delivered a firm message that Pakatan Harapan (PH) was prepared to field candidates in every parliamentary and state constituency across the country should Barisan Nasional (BN) and Umno move away from the political cooperation established under the federal unity government framework.
His remarks followed an announcement made less than a day earlier by Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi, who said BN intended to contest all 56 state seats in Johor at the next state election.
The declaration has been widely interpreted as a challenge to PH’s position and influence within the state.
Anwar said PH had taken note of developments surrounding BN and Umno’s plans in Johor.
“We were taken by surprise by BN and Umno’s decision to contest all seats in Johor, although it is not entirely unexpected as we have been monitoring the situation. That is their choice,” he said.
He added that relations at the national leadership level remained stable and cordial for now, but stressed that PH would respond accordingly if a political contest emerged in Johor.
“At present, the central leadership remains good and harmonious. However, if they decide to compete directly in Johor, then PH is also making a clear decision today, we will contest all seats,” he said.
The PH chairman further indicated that preparations were already being made for a wider electoral scenario beyond Johor.
He named Negeri Sembilan, Selangor, Penang and Pahang among states where PH would also be prepared to contest every seat if cooperation within the unity government were to break down.
“In Negeri Sembilan, we will contest all seats. We are also prepared to do the same in Selangor, Penang and Pahang,” he reportedly said.
However, Anwar stressed that such a move would only be considered if existing political understandings were undermined by other parties.
“I say this only if they are the ones who begin breaching the agreement. If discussions and negotiations are conducted properly, we remain reasonable, patient and pragmatic. Our priority is to safeguard the country because we believe in practising stable politics,” he added.
