Chan Foong Hin among DAP’s eight defeated in Sabah

Chan Foong Hin loses Tanjung Aru as DAP is defeated in all eight Sabah seats, prompting party reflection and review.

KOTA KINABALU: Federal Deputy Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Chan Foong Hin failed to capture the Tanjung Aru seat in the 17th Sabah State Election today.

Chan, who is also Kota Kinabalu Member of Parliament, said that he accepts and respects the election results.

“The people of Sabah have made their choice, and I take this as a meaningful reminder to continue reflecting, improving myself and working harder for the progress of Kota Kinabalu.

“I will take this result as guidance to continue bettering myself, and to redouble my efforts and work in Kota Kinabalu,” he said in a post on his official Facebook page.

Chan was involved in a nine-cornered contest with Datuk Loh Ee Eng (PBK), Hiew Choon Yu (STAR), Datuk Wong Hong Jun (Warisan), Yee Wee Ping (PIS), Dennison R. Indang  (UPKO), Mohamed Zaim Ansawi (Independent), Ritchie Jay Cheng (Independent) and Suhaimi Buang (PN–Bersatu).

Meanwhile, Sabah DAP chairman Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe, who also failed to wrest the Likas seat, said the party will conduct a comprehensive post-mortem soon following losses in all eight seats it contested.

He said the defeat clearly reflects the people’s disappointment and serves as an important reminder for the party to make improvements.

“To all Sabahans, I hear your voices of disappointment. We will continue fighting for the Sabah we all love. I would also like to express my utmost appreciation to all voters who came out to vote today.

“At the same time, I would like to congratulate all candidates who have won in the seats they contested,” he said.

Earlier, DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke said in a statement that the party was defeated in all eight seats it contested, namely Luyang, Kapayan, Likas, Tanjong Papat, Elopura, Sri Tanjong, Tanjung Aru and Kemabong. – Bernama
