Fahmi warns Johor voters of digital sabotage tactics

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil cautions Johor voters against fake accounts and misinformation during the state election campaign.

MUAR: Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has warned voters to be alert to digital sabotage tactics, after attempts to set up fake accounts using candidates’ images to spread misinformation during the Johor state election campaign.

He said the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is currently keeping close watch on any dissemination of false election information linked to such tactics.

Fahmi also said he was disappointed by cases of physical sabotage, including damage to flags and candidates’ billboards, which he described as unhealthy and outdated campaign tactics.

“I have yet to receive updated information from the MCMC on the number of posts flagged for removal involving false information or election misinformation. However, all platforms have said that election misinformation breaches their community guidelines.

“We want to avoid the spread of false news, and I ask voters to always refer to mainstream media,” he told reporters after attending a charity dinner at a restaurant here tonight.

Fahmi also said that any use of gangsterism to intimidate party workers or the public must be stopped immediately to ensure Malaysia’s democratic process remains peaceful and orderly.

He said that the maturity of Malaysia’s political landscape requires all candidates to campaign in a healthy manner, without attacking others’ personal character.

Earlier today, PKR secretary-general Datuk Fuziah Salleh said the Pakatan Harapan (PH) campaign in areas the coalition contests in the Johor state election are proceeding smoothly, despite a number of minor incidents that appear to be attempts to disrupt it.

“There have been small incidents such as torn posters, damaged billboards and burning of flags, but overall, our campaign in the Johor state election remains calm and the PH campaign’s momentum is not affected,” she said in Johor Bahru.

Polling day for the Johor state election has been set for July 11, with early voting on July 7.
