The phrase “好久不见大哥” (long time no see, big brother) quickly caught the attention of fans, many of whom saw it as a heartfelt gesture reflecting the mutual respect between two of badminton’s greatest players from different generations.

According to their head-to-head record, Chong Wei and Viktor Axelsen faced each other 14 times on the international stage, with the Malaysian icon dominating the rivalry in its early years.

Chong Wei holds an 11–3 advantage over Axelsen, claiming memorable victories in major tournaments, including the 2014 World Championships semi-finals and several Malaysia Open encounters.

However, the tide eventually turned as Axelsen emerged as one of the sport’s dominant forces. He secured important wins over Chong Wei, including triumphs at the 2017 Japan Open final and the 2017 Dubai World Superseries Finals, marking his rise to world number one.

Interestingly, their final two meetings in 2018 both ended in Chong Wei’s favour, serving as a fitting reminder of the Malaysian great’s enduring quality even in the latter stages of his career.

The unexpected reunion has since reignited admiration for both players, with many fans reminiscing about one of badminton’s most memorable cross-generational rivalries.

Social media was soon flooded with heartfelt reactions, with many describing the encounter as a meeting of legends and praising the genuine respect shared between the two champions.

For many, the photo was more than just a chance meeting, it was a symbolic reminder of badminton’s golden era, where greatness continues to recognise greatness.

“I live in the same city as Chong Wei, never bumped into him. Haha,” one user, khairulkadri87, commented.

“You bumped into our hero, the national treasure. Wishing you a wonderful day in Tokyo, champ! God bless both of you,” amirpartipipel_ commented.

“Too much greatness in one picture,” andriagutama wrote.
