Melaka may keep young BN line-up for next state polls

Melaka CM hints at retaining young BN leaders for next state election, citing strong performance and teamwork among current reps

ALOR GAJAH: Melaka UMNO liaison committee chairman Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh does not rule out the possibility of retaining the line-up of young Barisan Nasional (BN) leaders selected in the last state election for the next polls.

The Melaka Chief Minister said the move was based on the performance and strong commitment shown by all current elected representatives throughout their service, as well as their unity in the spirit of comradeship and teamwork.

“Most of the new generation selected in the last term are below 50 years old and are still capable of continuing to provide the best service,” he told reporters after attending a ceremony to celebrate retired firefighters held in conjunction with the World Firefighters Day at the Masjid Tanah parliamentary level here today.

Commenting on the selection of candidates for the next state election, Ab Rauf said it was still too early to finalise the list of individuals to be retained or otherwise.

“To think about who stays and who goes, the time has not come yet. I shortened the list of candidates long ago. I have never extended the names on the list. So wait for the right time for us to announce it,” he said.

Meanwhile, touching on the possibility of Melaka holding its state election simultaneously with Johor, he said the political situation in each state was different and required proper consideration.

“The situation in Johor and Melaka is not the same, just as the situation in Melaka and Malaysia as a whole is different. We will think of the best way for Melaka to stand on its own feet,” he said.

The term of the 15th Melaka State Legislative Assembly will end in December, paving the way for the state election.
