Sabah polls: EC deploys extra ballot boxes for larger papers

Additional ballot boxes will be used in Sabah’s state election due to larger ballot paper sizes in multi-cornered fights, the Election Commission says.

KOTA KINABALU: The Election Commission will deploy additional ballot boxes in several constituencies during Saturday’s Sabah state election due to larger ballot paper sizes.

EC secretary Datuk Khairul Shahril said these ballot boxes will be used in voting streams with higher numbers of candidates and voters.

“For constituencies with seven- to 12-cornered contests, one ballot box will be used if voters number fewer than 450,” he said in a statement on Friday.

“Two ballot boxes will be required if there are more than 450 voters in these constituencies.”

For constituencies facing 13- and 14-cornered fights, two ballot boxes are needed for fewer than 450 voters.

Three boxes will be used if voter numbers exceed 450 in these highly contested areas.

Khairul also confirmed the EC had completed checks on all voting equipment including ballot boxes, indelible ink, ballot papers and electoral rolls.

The verification ensures all materials are complete and in good condition for polling day.

A total of 1,742,934 voters are eligible to cast ballots in this state election.

Polling will occur at 882 stations with 3,559 voting streams opening simultaneously at 7.30am on Saturday.

Closing times will be staggered between noon and 5.30pm.

Some 28,533 personnel will be on duty to facilitate the voting process.
