UMNO remains committed to unity government, rejects other offers

UMNO President Ahmad Zahid says the party is committed to the unity government, despite receiving political offers from other parties.

KUALA LUMPUR: UMNO President Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi reiterated that the party remains committed to supporting Malaysia’s Unity Government, despite revealing that it has received offers of political cooperation from other parties.

Ahmad Zahid, who is also Deputy Prime Minister, said UMNO continues to uphold its principles and commitment in government formation and political cooperation to ensure national stability.

“There have indeed been offers, feelers and attempts to court us. But to this day, UMNO has remained faithful to its national mandate and continues to support the Unity Government.

“As long as the foundations of the nation are respected, nothing is betrayed. Sincerity is not compromised, and UMNO will continue to play its role responsibly,” he said in his presidential policy speech at the UMNO General Assembly 2025 here today.

Ahmad Zahid acknowledged internal pressure for UMNO to leave the government but said the leadership’s decision was guided by national interests and the greater good.

On Jan 5, he said UMNO and Barisan Nasional (BN) would remain in the Unity Government with Pakatan Harapan (PH) until the end of the current term, despite calls from the party’s Youth wing to withdraw.

In his speech, Ahmad Zahid also congratulated Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on his leadership, saying the country has been well governed under his administration.

He said that over the past 38 months, Malaysia has recorded stronger economic fundamentals, including sustainable gross domestic product growth, a firmer ringgit and rising foreign direct investment.

He noted that the unemployment rate has declined, poverty levels have been reduced, and various forms of assistance have been delivered to the people.

Ahmad Zahid said the education agenda has also been strengthened through the National Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Agenda, which offers higher wages for young people.

He said that Malaysia has further enhanced its international standing through its active advocacy for Palestine and its successful role as ASEAN Chair.

“I believe all these achievements are the result of the support and political stability brought by UMNO,” he added.
