UMNO wings push for younger candidates and merit-based leadership

UMNO’s women and youth wings call for younger candidates, merit-based appointments and early candidate announcements ahead of state elections.

KUALA LUMPUR: UMNO’s wings have concluded their assemblies with strong calls for party rejuvenation and future-focused politics.

Puteri chief Datuk Nurul Amal Mohd Fauzi urged immediate efforts to field younger candidates, particularly from women and youth ranks.

She stressed opportunities must be granted fairly, including to Puteri leaders in winnable constituencies.

“This is particularly crucial ahead of the Melaka and Johor state elections,” she said.

Nurul Amal said these polls will test whether women’s participation is a reality or remains a promise.

She added that candidate announcements should be made earlier than the current two-week window before nomination day.

Wanita chief Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad called on women to equip themselves with skills for leadership.

She stressed that appointments should be based on merit rather than gender alone.

Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh said the movement would work to restore UMNO as a dominant political force.

“This is no longer the time to rely on history, but to work towards a better future,” he said.

Akmal pledged increased grassroots engagement to strengthen party machinery ahead of GE16. – Bernama
