Port Klang ranks 10th globally in Lloyds List Top 100 Ports 2025, handling 14.64 million TEUs and setting new benchmarks for Malaysia’s maritime sector
KUALA LUMPUR: Port Klang has officially secured its position among the world’s top 10 container ports in the Lloyds List of the World’s Top 100 Ports 2025.
This historic achievement follows the port’s handling of 14.64 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in 2024.
The 10th place ranking cements Port Klang’s reputation as a strategic transshipment hub and gateway to global trade.
Port Klang Authority General Manager Captain K. Subramaniam said the achievement represents more than a numerical ranking.
“It underscores the success of the port’s holistic development strategy in not just building more terminals but also building smarter and greener,” he told Bernama.
He attributed the port’s consistent rise to leadership and partnership, strong policy support, and operational efficiency.
Infrastructure development and sustainable port practices also contributed significantly to this global recognition.
The port’s dual terminal strength is exemplified by the ambitious Westports 2 Project.
This long-term development will more than double the port’s handling capacity to 27 million TEUs by 2054 from 14 million TEUs.
Northport is simultaneously enhancing its operational capabilities under a five-year upgrading blueprint.
Digitalisation remains a cornerstone of the port’s transformation agenda.
Initiatives include the Malaysia Maritime Single Window and adoption of smart port technologies.
Sustainability has emerged as a defining factor for future growth at Port Klang.
Both Westports and Northport have adopted eco-friendly technologies and practices.
These include solar energy systems, energy-efficient e-RTG cranes, and comprehensive environmental monitoring.
Port Klang invests heavily in continuous training and upskilling for its workforce.
“Technology drives productivity, but people drive transformation,” Captain Subramaniam emphasised.
Looking ahead, Port Klang is charting a bold course with the Carey Island Third Port Development.
This transformative initiative is designed to handle up to 30 million TEUs annually.
The project marks a decisive leap toward a smart, automated, and sustainable port ecosystem.
At its heart will be the Maritime and Industrial Free Trade Zone.
This zone will act as a catalyst for industrial growth and international investment.
Port Klang’s achievement reflects Malaysia’s growing competitiveness in the international maritime landscape.
The port serves as a vital link between ASEAN, China, and the broader global trade network.
Its performance strengthens Malaysia’s logistics ecosystem and advances national trade facilitation efforts.
Port Klang’s success aligns with Malaysia’s broader vision under the National Transport Policy.
The Malaysia MADANI agenda also supports this commitment to sustainable and inclusive growth.
Federal support has been pivotal in enhancing last-mile connectivity to the port.
Recent allocations include RM50 million for maintenance and upgrading of access roads.
Intermodal links will be further enhanced through ongoing rail and expressway projects.
These developments position Port Klang to ascend to new heights of global influence.
