Malaysia’s 2026 preschool curriculum will strengthen shared reading practices and create dedicated reading spaces to encourage parental involvement.
CYBERJAYA: The upcoming Preschool Curriculum 2026 will strengthen early literacy by placing a stronger emphasis on shared reading practices between parents and children.
Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the initiative aims to boost early literacy through dedicated reading spaces in preschools.
She said these spaces are designed to encourage greater parental involvement in structured reading activities.
The initiative has received full support from Perbadanan Kota Buku and its strategic partners for effective preschool-level implementation.
Fadhlina stressed the continued importance of reading physical books alongside digital advancements.
This practice will be reinforced through programmes like NILAM, or Nadi Ilmu Amalan Membaca, which will be strengthened next year.
She was speaking at the Malam Kota Buku 2025 event which highlighted PKB’s role in developing reading infrastructure.
The agency, under the Ministry of Education, implements structured national reading programmes.
Separately, Fadhlina said several book industry focus areas will be prioritised in 2026.
Efforts will also promote the ethical use of digital technology to expand access to quality reading materials.
This will be achieved through continued collaboration with Perbadanan Kota Buku.
The event also presented recognitions to industry players, schools, reading communities and strategic partners.
These awards aim to promote excellence and foster cross-sector collaboration within the national book ecosystem.
Also present were Ministry of Education secretary-general Datuk Dr Aminuddin Hassim and PKB chief executive officer Adibah Omar.
