The Raja Muda of Perlis says Syariah Court powers, including remand detention authority, should be reviewed to strengthen its role within the constitutional framework.
KANGAR: The jurisdiction of the Syariah Court should be reviewed periodically to ensure its powers are maximised without overstepping the Federal Constitution.
The Raja Muda of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail, said matters like criminal procedure and remand detention authority require comprehensive study.
He said this would determine if such powers are necessary within the current Syariah judicial system.
“The Syariah Court must remain sensitive to existing jurisdictions, particularly in Syariah criminal jurisdiction, to ensure judicial power can be exercised more orderly and effectively,” he said in a statement from the Arau Palace.
His Royal Highness added that strengthening Syariah criminal jurisdiction is vital to reinforce the court’s role as a credible institution of justice.
He made these remarks after leading the MAIPs Peduli Programme, a charity cycling event organised by the Perlis Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council.
The statement noted the cycling programme has become an iconic brand in Perlis, combining sports, outreach, and welfare.
It emphasised a ‘down-to-earth’ approach by bringing officials directly to the homes of the needy.
This method allows for a closer and more effective understanding of the lives of tithe recipients and the underprivileged.
In conjunction with the event, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin presented zakat contributions to three recipients from various villages in the state.
