Raja Muda of Selangor becomes RMN lieutenant commander

Tengku Amir Shah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah is commissioned as a lieutenant commander in the Royal Malaysian Navy, continuing the royal family’s maritime legacy

KUALA LUMPUR: The Raja Muda of Selangor, Tengku Amir Shah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, was today commissioned as a lieutenant commander in the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN).

The RMN headquarters said the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, pinned the rank during a ceremony at Istana Alam Shah in Klang.

It said Tengku Amir Shah’s transfer from the Malaysian Army to the RMN Executive Branch was consented to by the King through the Armed Forces Council (MAT) meeting, effective Nov 19, 2025.

“This transfer continues the Selangor royal family’s longstanding association with the maritime sphere and service in the RMN.

“Tengku Amir Shah’s grandfather, the late Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Alhaj, served as the third captain-in-chief of the RMN, while his father, Sultan Sharafuddin, remains the captain-in-chief of the RMN to this day,” it said in a statement.

According to the statement, Tengku Amir Shah, who previously held the rank of RMN lieutenant, was promoted to lieutenant commander following approval at the 633rd Armed Forces Council meeting, with seniority effective from Feb 24, 2026.

“The Raja Muda of Selangor has also been assigned to the Naval Volunteer Reserve unit, KD Sri Klang,” it said.

It added that Tengku Amir Shah will undergo comprehensive familiarisation training to gain a deeper understanding of the RMN’s roles, functions and working culture.

The Raja Muda will also undergo ship-handling training and participate in joint exercises involving the RMN and the navies of friendly nations.

Tengku Amir Shah began his military career in 2014 when he underwent officer cadet training at the Army Academy in Port Dickson before continuing his training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom from 2015 to 2016.

The Raja Muda was commissioned as a second lieutenant on July 19, 2016 and posted to the 17th Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment (17 RAMD) Para as chief of the Assault Pioneer Platoon.

On April 15, 2017, Tengku Amir Shah was promoted to lieutenant before attaining the rank of captain on Nov 19, 2020.
