Sabah desalination plant could be model for industrial water supply

The Jetama seawater desalination plant at POIC Lahad Datu is seen as a potential model to solve industrial water supply issues in Sabah.

LAHAD DATU: The newly launched Jetama seawater desalination plant at the Oil and Gas Industrial Park (POIC) here could become a model for industrial water supply across Sabah.

Deputy Chief Minister III Datuk Ewon Benedick said the plant provides an in-situ solution to water supply challenges for factories operating within the industrial park.

He stated that ensuring additional water via desalination is crucial for maintaining uninterrupted industrial operations.

This supports the ongoing development and growth of POIC Lahad Datu as a key economic zone.

“At present, 46 major enterprises are operating in POIC Lahad Datu, and the area still has strong development potential,” Ewon said.

He added this aligns with the vision of establishing POIC Lahad Datu as Sabah’s eastern gateway.

Ewon, who is also Sabah Minister of Industrial Development, said his ministry will support such innovative initiatives.

This support aims to strengthen the state’s industrial ecosystem and ensure sustainable basic supplies for the sector.

He also highlighted the need to expand industrial areas and review related development policies in Sabah.

“This is important to ensure that these industrial parks are able to function effectively as drivers of the state’s economic development,” he said.
