Sabah’s education ministry prioritises upgrading 300 dilapidated schools, citing student safety, teacher well-being, and educational dignity as key concerns.
KOTA KINABALU: Upgrading dilapidated schools is a primary focus for the Sabah Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation.
Minister Datuk James Ratib said the initiative aims to ensure the comfort and safety of students and teachers across the state.
He stated the work includes developing schools categorised as scale six and seven, which are in the worst condition.

“The schools in question require urgent attention because they involve aspects of safety, comfort and continuity of the students’ learning process as well as the well-being of educators,” he said.
Ratib emphasised that dilapidated schools are an issue of educational dignity and social justice, not merely a building problem.
He committed to being a strong advocacy voice at both state and federal government levels.
The ministry will also ensure all repair and construction projects are implemented with integrity, transparency, and high impact.
Ratib made these remarks after addressing staff at the Sabah International Convention Centre today.
He revealed that Sabah has approximately 300 dilapidated schools requiring upgrades.
“InsyaAllah this year we will upgrade the schools involved,” he added.
The minister stressed that their responsibility extends beyond reporting problems to ensuring effective solutions are implemented. – Bernama
