Sarawak’s minister discusses gender issues and welfare with her Indian counterpart in New Delhi, focusing on support for victims of violence and a major 2026 women’s assembly.
NEW DELHI: Sarawak’s Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah held talks with India’s Women and Child Development Minister Annapurna Devi.
The meeting in New Delhi focused on gender issues, women’s welfare and enhancing support systems for victims of violence.
The Malaysian High Commission said the courtesy call underscored both nations’ commitment to women’s empowerment and gender equality.
Devi said the interaction provided an opportunity to exchange views on women empowerment, early childhood development and community wellbeing.
Fatimah’s visit from January 5 to 7 was at the invitation of South Asian Women’s Network patron Veena Sikri, a retired Indian diplomat.
The Sarawak minister and her delegation also participated in a civil society dialogue organised by SWAN.
The discussion focused on the South Asian International Women’s Assembly 2026, to be held in Kuching from September 8 to 10.
The assembly is being organised by the Sarawak Indian Women Association, with SWAN seeking to collaborate with Sarawak on the initiative.
Participants discussed best practices, logistical support and ideas for the event, which is expected to draw women leaders, policymakers and civil society actors.
