Sarawak Premier Abang Johari says his successor must have high integrity, with the people, not any individual, deciding the state’s next leader.
KUCHING: Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg says his successor must possess strong character, high integrity, and sincerity in serving the people.
He stressed that the selection of the state’s highest leader is not determined by any individual or party but rests entirely with the voice of the people.
“The people must judge a candidate’s potential for this role, as it is a position of immense trust,” he said during the Premier’s Townhall event last night.
He was responding to a question from an audience member about his potential successor.
Abang Johari added that any error or abuse of power by a leader could have a major impact on the state’s future.
He said Sarawak needs leaders who understand its multi-ethnic and multi-religious society and can maintain harmony.
The premier said the younger generation of leaders must be trained and prepared to shoulder great responsibility.
“A leader must be trained… I am thankful that I was trained by leaders before me,” he said.
He added that the time will come for a new generation to develop Sarawak with a fresh approach.
