Sarawak strengthens its green energy hub status as the Sarawak-Sabah power grid interconnection is officially energised, enabling renewable energy sharing.
KOTA KINABALU: Sarawak is strengthening its position as a regional green energy hub through the newly energised Sarawak-Sabah Power Grid Interconnection Project.
Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the state is poised to share its abundant renewable power resources with neighbouring Sabah, Brunei, and Kalimantan.
“We are blessed with abundant, predominantly renewable energy resources, particularly hydropower,” he said at the energisation ceremony.
Abang Johari and Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor jointly officiated the activation of the 275-kilovolt transmission line.
Electricity has been flowing from Sarawak to Sabah since December following successful system synchronisation.
The Premier said Sarawak is exploring cascading hydropower and floating solar to boost capacity to 10 gigawatts by 2030 and 15GW by 2035.
He stated the interconnection supports inclusive economic growth and enhances electricity reliability across both states.
The project also advances the Sarawak Energy Transition Policy by enabling renewable energy sharing for a lower-carbon regional mix.
Abang Johari added it contributes to Malaysia’s national energy transition and security goals outlined in the National Energy Transition Roadmap.
