Selangor focuses on human expertise for nuclear energy exploration

Selangor is prioritising human resource development to explore nuclear energy, sending officers to Tsinghua University and other countries for training before conducting feasibility studies.

SHAH ALAM: The Selangor state government is focusing on building human resource expertise as an initial step to explore nuclear energy as a new power source.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said officers and engineers are being sent to Tsinghua University in China and other countries for training.

He noted the proposal is still in its early stages, with the current focus on examining existing development models.

“We will focus on human resource capacity building in the initial phase,” he told reporters after an MoU exchange ceremony between Wanita Berdaya Selangor and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia.

“Without careful preparation, especially regarding local expertise, it might cause anxiety in the community.”

Amirudin said this exploration represents the state’s preparation for moving away from reliance on dwindling fossil energy sources.

“If we continue to rely on imported fossil fuels, they will run dry and the cost is more expensive now,” he explained.

He mentioned a five-year timeline for readiness, with one to five years dedicated to capacity building before developing comprehensive action plans and blueprints.

The state government is currently in the early phase of exploration, including related expertise development.
