86 unlicensed accommodation premises in Semporna must apply for licences within three months or face enforcement action, says Sabah ministry.
KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment has issued a three-month ultimatum to 86 unlicensed accommodation premises in Semporna.
Assistant Minister Dr Andi Md Shamsureezal Mohd Saina said operators must complete their licence applications and comply with all legal requirements within the deadline.
He warned that action would be taken against those who fail to apply, with integrated enforcement operations to follow.
“Based on current findings, 190 accommodation premises are operating in Semporna,” he said in a statement.
“Of this number, 45 are licensed, 59 are in the process of applying, while 86 have yet to apply.”
He made the remarks after chairing a special working committee meeting to address tourism issues in the district.
The meeting was part of proactive efforts to strengthen safety levels and boost tourist confidence in the popular destination.
“Semporna is a safe tourist destination,” he asserted.
“The ministry would soon carry out integrated operations with enforcement agencies and local authorities.”
He said the focus would be on ensuring compliance with licensing requirements and tourist safety standard operating procedures.
The ministry will also publish these safety SOPs on its official website for public access and stakeholder reference.
