Seven historic Penang mosques are now officially gazetted heritage buildings with over RM1.17 million allocated for their maintenance and conservation.
GEORGE TOWN: Seven historic mosques in Penang have been officially gazetted as heritage buildings. More than RM1.17 million has been allocated for their maintenance and conservation works.
Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Dr Mohamad Abdul Hamid listed the mosques and their allocations as Masjid Kapitan Keling (RM400,000), Masjid Melayu Lebuh Acheh (RM404,343.20), Masjid Alimsah Waley (RM142,000), Masjid Jamek Benggali (RM182,100), Masjid Jamek Perangin (RM17,700) and Masjid Titi Papan (RM27,150).
Masjid Pintal Tali has yet to submit complete documentation for funding consideration.
The state government has activated the Heritage Building Owners’ Support Line through George Town World Heritage Incorporated.
This initiative assists owners, including mosque committees, with restoration works for Category I and II structures within the George Town UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Mohamad said the maintenance plan aims to preserve the mosques’ historical value, architectural elements and cultural heritage.
This ensures they remain safe and functional for community use.
All restoration must comply with the Conservation Guidelines for Buildings and Sites under the Special Area Plan.
These regulations govern work within the George Town UNESCO World Heritage Site.
He provided this information in a written reply to Penaga assemblyman Mohd Yusni Mat Piah during the Penang State Legislative Assembly sitting.
The mosques were built between 1801 and 1890, representing key heritage assets.
These structures reflect the growth and development of Penang’s Muslim community.
