Severe Sarawak Floods: Bomba rescues hundreds in Miri, Niah

Heavy monsoon rains cause major flooding across Sarawak. Fire dept rescues 4 trapped on highway

MIRI: Multiple districts across Sarawak are experiencing severe flooding following relentless monsoon rains, with emergency response teams conducting urgent rescue operations throughout the state.

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department has been working through the morning hours to extract residents from submerged homes and vehicles as floodwaters continue rising across the region.

In a dramatic operation this morning, firefighters successfully saved four men whose four-wheel-drive vehicle became stranded on a highway submerged under 1.5 meters of floodwater in Niah district, northern Sarawak.

The emergency call came in at 11am, prompting immediate deployment of rescue boats to reach the stranded occupants. The incident occurred approximately 120 kilometers from Miri city.

Rescue teams identified the four men as Fidauz Jabrie, 26, Shamizi Suhaimi, 40, and Amizan Hazami, 44—all Malaysian nationals—along with Rustawan, 28, an Indonesian citizen. All four have been transported to safety.

The flooding crisis extends beyond Niah, with emergency situations reported in Tatau, Bintulu, and Miri districts as well.

By morning, authorities had evacuated at least 350 individuals from flooded longhouses scattered across the affected areas. Emergency response operations remain active, with ground rescue units stationed throughout all flood zones.

Sarawak is currently experiencing widespread heavy rainfall as monsoon conditions intensify statewide. The Fire and Rescue Department continues coordinating ongoing evacuation efforts as weather conditions persist.

Rescue personnel remain on high alert as additional areas may require emergency assistance in the coming hours.
